“Don Lewandoski Triumphs at the WorldWide Electric Spring Classic”

By Wes Bailey

VICTOR, NY ---- Victor Rod and Gun Club hosted the second annual WorldWide Electric Spring Classic (formerly the Mendon House Restaurant Spring Classic) on April 30, 2017.  This 12 gauge and doubles one-day event kicks off the registered skeet season in Western, New York.  After a flawless registration process, 35 shooters were eager to take to the fields for the day’s events.

Although Western New York had a relatively mild winter by local standards, this day had brisk winds and temperatures in the lower 50’s.   A few sprinkles of rain greeted the early shooters, but mercifully ceased during the first flight.  The club members greeted the shooters and renewed a number of old friendships in the process.  The club was in excellent shape and the shooters were delighted with the many capital improvements to the facilities in order to enhance the shooting experience.  The fields were well manicured and the machines fine-tuned for the day’s competition.  Although this is a one of the first registered shoots in Western New York, the shooters were ready to post mid-season scores as evidenced by two 99’s and five 98’s in the 12 gauge event.  Squad mates Don Lewandoski and Joe Strazzeri took their 99’s to the shoot-offs.  Don prevailed as 12 gauge Champ in a spirited, but short shoot-off with Joe being the 12 gauge Runner-up.  The balance of the 12 gauge shoot-offs were short-lived as well.  Other 12 gauge winners included, (AA) Bill Black, (A) Dale “Bob” Patterson, (B) Mike Kinsella, (C) Svilen Vasilev, (D) Mike Thompson, and (E) Michael Cawley.  By the way,   Michael Cawley is a junior shooter that shows great promise.  He posted a 97 in E class.  Way to go, Michael!

At midday, the shooters managed to find time to enjoy some good food for lunch.  The sun actually started to appear to brighten the day and warm the shooters.  Dess Ivanov and Don Lewandoski both crushed 98 targets.  Dess claimed the Doubles champion title after an exciting shoot-off, leaving Lewandoski as the Double Runner-up.  The other winners were (AA) Ricky Laurito Sr., (A) Sam Heusler, (B) Hunter Dickerman, (C) Jim Fox, and (D) Mark Snyder.  As a point of interest, Hunter Dickerman is another Junior shooter that is steadily rising through the ranks and has a great skeet future ahead of him.

For the fourth year in a row, a shoot-off was not required to crown the HOA champ.   Don Lewandoski’s fine 197 x 200 bested the field of shooters by three targets to take home the HOA Champ title and prize money.   The HOA Runner-up title required a shoot-off between Justin Aldrich and Sam Heusler.       Justin was able to squeak out the win for the HOA runner-up in the shoot-off with Heusler becoming the (AA) class winner.  The remaining HOA class winners were (A) Joe Strazzeri, (B) Hunter Dickerman, and (C) Michael Cawley.

The volunteer members of the Victor Rod and Gun club did a great job of preparing for this shoot and the results speak for themselves.   Everything ran smoothly from registration through to the shoot-offs.  The shooters and the referees noticed the effort and were very appreciative.

A special thank you goes to avid shooters Fred Rosen and Rick Simmonds, owners of WorldWide Electric Corporation, for sponsoring this shoot.  WorldWide Electric Corporation is the premier domestic importer of electric motors, drives, and speed reducers.  Fred’s and Rick’s generosity on behalf of this shoot is greatly appreciated.  They plan on making next year’s WorldWide Electric Spring Classic the best spring shoot ever.  Watch for the shoot information as you won’t want to miss the 2018 shoot!

We also want to thank the referee crew and their leader, Chief Referee Dan Caryl.  The referees did a fantastic job as always.  Most importantly, we would like to thank the shooters.  Without shooters willing to travel from across the region to participate, we could not have a successful shoot.   We are very fortunate to have such a passionate group of skeet shooters in this part of the country.  We hope to see them all again next year!
